Ask HN: Do any “secure” domain registrars exist?

Why are new services such as ProtonMail defaulting to GoDaddy as their registrar? It just seems odd to me that a modern e-mail service which emphasizes encryption and privacy as a marketing point is using GoDaddy as their default registrar.

I recall GoDaddy having many security incidents', many which included social engineering that led to valuable domain hijacking.

Also when you consider how easily the U.S has seized .COM domains in the past, it leaves a eerie feeling.
