Even if you are UK citizen you have to earn more than X pounds per year to keep your non-EU spouse with you in the country. I have met some PhD students and retired workers with this problem.
I am sure that there are more inconveniences that I have not heard about yet.

I find that astonishing. I had a quick look and couldn't find anything that suggested you need to earn a minimum amount. The only requirement (regarding employment) that I saw was that the resident much meet the EU Treaty requirements but any employment restrictions are for non-UK citizens.
Do you possibly have a source as I'd be very interested indeed?
