Is there some reason that Google didn't take the cloud services business as seriously as Amazon did? It looks like a huge moneymaker for Amazon, and from my rather uninformed perspective, I would have thought it was much more aligned with Google's competencies than Amazon's.
Until their customer service experience is equivalent to AWS... I'll just keep paying google for things like the Maps API but do all my work on AWS.
If the shit hits the fan... I need to guarantees, that as few things as possible could have caused it, and that I can get it fixed as fast as possible.
Google does too much, my accounts are too connected, they associate things to deeply. I can't trust them with my business.
With AWS the only way it stops is I told it to, or there was a billing issue. And if there was an issue, I had it fixed in under 15 minutes with one phone call. Google has yet to even try and give me that kind of experience in ANY aspect of their commercial services that I've paid for as. a customer.
Unfortunately for Google this is 100% true. They are in no way a good business partner to any commercial operation. While I think on a tech level they may have more brilliant engineers than Amazon, they can't seem to get the business side right.
Well my 2cts.. I'm sure they take it serious but AWS has been around for longer, and developers seem to really like it, cause you can spin up a small environment and just play around with it. Google Cloud Platform exists now but I feel it's a bit late to the race. Google App Engine existed before Google Cloud Platform and it was super nice to use in my experience, however at the same time totally locked in with Google. If you wanted to get out it required a lot of development effort, which is not per se the same on AWS. Besides that, there was the Google App Engine bait-and-switch which screwed so many people over.. People who were doing low budget products on Google App Engine and basically had to migrate to something else immediately. This left a bad taste in my mouth and I'm sure I'm not the only one, I've never recommended Google App Engine after this.
Last but not least Google has a super bad reputation when it comes to people's privacy, which many developers care a lot about.
I am very happy to let you know that perspective is informed and correct too! Google Cloud is far better than AWS. Especially in things like Ease of use, scalability, big data, machine learning, NoOps, pricing Google Cloud beats AWS by miles margin.

Citation needed. Google has a pretty high reputation for privacy. They implement almost all industry best practices.
Google seems to brag about financial incompetence when it comes to "other" projects.
If those statements are what you use to reason your way about why AWS was first it can make sense. Though if that's the real reason it's hard to say.

IMHO, from what I've seen of GCP's performance last year, it's still far behind AWS in terms of reliability.
The gorilla cloud providers are (quietly) punching in very different weight class.
