Will HN's no politics rule apply to unilateral changes to US immigration?

HN is a central resource for discussion amongst the smartest and most plugged-in people in the world. We should be collaborating on technologies to fight back against ignorance and intolerance. Instead we debate the merits of database implementations. Why is this? Because HN (as a result of SV mentality) believes the fallacy that silence is apolitical.

There are plenty of other places to talk about this kind of thing. Why must every forum be politicized? Why must every forum be turned into a soapbox?

"smartest and most plugged-in" - a little hubris such as this can go a long way - in the wrong direction. More important than this would be humility, gentleness, self control, joy, peacefulness, and many other things.

This issue has been on the front page on at least a dozen different posts in the last couple of days, sometimes with more than a thousand votes. If that's not enough, what is?
