Ask HN: Do freelance app developers still do well?

I built apps for clients for a while during uni , roughly 2013-14. I was doing alright apart from the regular requests to build apps when the client didn't really have any money. I knew quite a few other freelancers back then. How is the situation now? Can solo freelancers still make money?
