Ask HN: Publishing on closed source software

Are there any good resources for understand the restrictions on writing on software?

I have several years worth of work on benchmarking various distributed databases I've had the opportunity to work with. I wanted to aggregate it up into a series of blogs talking about my experiences.

I seem to remember certain restrictions out there such as not being able to release benchmarks on SQL Server. I'd hate to put all the effort in this if there is a chance I might be asked to take it down.
