Whenever I read about guys behaving this badly, I always get a sneaky suspicion they've been free riding their whole career. If you don't give a shit, it's a hell of lot easier to just take credit for others' work than do any of your own. And all this drama sounds exhausting. I can't imagine trying to hold down a meaningful contribution to tech and doing all this bullshit on the side. Easier to free ride and try to get your name in the paper.
One thing was really odd here. A guy you don't like or trust comes into your room and asks you 3 times to put eye drops in your eyes. And you do it? WTF?
Not only is it not a major point in the account, it's strange but certainly plausible a coworker you're staying with on a trip who's forceful could coerce you into doing something that in hindsight seems stupid. And... That's the only thing that was really odd to you? I think you're completely missing the point.
Those Japanese eye drops were kind of a trendy thing at the time (and the incident happened in Tokyo.) Of course, if you agree and you have a bad reaction is it really the other guy's fault? (Assuming no tampering.)
