How do I pivot?

I'm a 35 year old full stack software engineer with a Bsc in software engineering. As a contractor for the last 10 years I have earned very well. But I no longer like my job. I haven't for a few years now.

I always talk big at parties about us being on the verge of huge changes, automation and AI, basic income, yadaya. And I really believe it.

Yet I am not contributing to that, its just talk. If I dig deep, and ask myself what do I really want to do, putting aside old fears of math, and disregarding income then the answer is easy. I want to contribute to this movement, even if it's small. It really matters, it's not just another web form.

What could I realistically do though? I have the means to support myself for years without income.

- A full time masters (age might be a bit weird) - Udacity DeepLearning into the AI programme - Something else?

I'm posting for very general advice from my peers. A small sanity check before I quit my job and have my midlife crisis - as others might frame it :)

The formal system for changing oneself is academia. It appeals to some people and not others. That difference in taste is ok.

Sort of made me think of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f84n5oFoZBc But everyone is not where Hickey is and nobody else is him.
