Bannon is a good example of how important the candidate's handler is. If you want to help in politics, but aren't directly interested in running as a candidate, consider developing your skills as a campaigner. Help with a campaign, with the intent of the next running one.
Random speculation, but I wonder if this is related to Ivanka getting a larger role in advising her father [1]. It's pretty obvious based on her speeches that her politics differ significantly from Bannon's.
The issue isn't campaign advisor versus administration advisor, it's ultimately pragmatism. Karl Rove was truly hated by the left during the Bush years but he wasn't as extreme or as inexperienced as Bannon and the government wasn't a perpetual train wreck at the time so he didn't generate nearly as much controversy.
I'm usually reluctant to flag stories if they have underlying issues that merit discussion, but as a link a TV news station about breaking news, this seems like the epitome of "If they'd cover it on TV news, it's probably off-topic." But I would love to see some real discussion of Bannon's actual philosophy.
