Ask HN: How would Ubuntu's move to Gnome3 affect Debian vs. Ubuntu installs?

Now that Debian and Ubuntu v18 are going to use the same Desktop Environment (Gnome 3), what major difference would a desktop user see between the two distributions? I'm not sure if Ubuntu's "more frequent release cycle" will continue to give them a lead in desktop GNU/Linux adoption after they drop Unity?
