Well, forcing users to learn a very rigid and alien workflow like that of GNOME (or Unity before) risks losing them. I sure can't get used to it - I want a taskbar showing my windows and flick my mouse to the top right to close windows. Any desktop that can't easily accommodate my workflow has no chance on my laptop. If you really want to challenge Microsoft, make migration easy, not hard. It is already hard enough to move to Linux...
Of course the Linux Desktop gave up on challenging Microsoft a long time ago, resorting to circle-jerking and tribal infighting instead. For sure parties like RH and SUSE don't have any desktop ambition at all, sadly :(
