Ask HN: Facebook's 2FA with third party apps

1 points by sdiq ↗ HN
I have just deactivated my Facebook account and I already feel sad. I feel sad because I mostly get my news from Facebook and that is something that I am going to miss. For some other reasons, I rarely watch TV as well as read local newspapers, and Facebook has been the one place where I kept in touch with the stuff that happen locally.

Now, let's say I am a bit paranoid and do not use mobile apps unless absolutely necessary. Thus, while I would want to continue using Facebook, I can not have their apps on my phone. On my browsers, I also use ad-blockers and some other extensions. These, I believe, do not really align well with Facebook's mission of making money through adverts. But, the reality is, even if I did not use these ad-blockers, the real chances of me clicking on any of these online adverts is closer to zero than one.

Also conscious of security, I have also been using Google's Authenticator for one-time passwords. Unfortunately, I can't seem to be able to use it with Facebook. While 2FA is also set for Facebook, Facebook doesn't seem to ever ask me for these tokens. I am thus wondering, is it me who has a problem using the same or it is just that I don't use their apps and also have ad-blockers. For context, my use of 2FA in the other services that I utilize do not seem to have any problems, at least so far.

Anyone else facing the same problem, here?
