This does not mean you will get the same quality out of the box. Microsoft hand-calibrates the Surface screens indiviually before they ship, just some thing to take into account.
Hand calibrates the screen? Does that mean someone does it by eye each time? I worked as a color matcher the human eye isn't all that sensitive I'd think you'd want to use a colorimeter and use that data to automatically match the desired colorimetry (most people won't even notice 1.5 delta e off in yellows, 3 delta e in blues) but then "by hand" wouldn't really make sense as that process would likely be automated.
hand calibrates usually means there is an additional process. A colorimeter is used but it can also be that a human worker oversees it, this is a setup beyond the initial calibration done at the factory and has some costs. For IPS panels there is also another process which is very manual and that is panel fitting, the panels are fitted by hand and tweaked a bit in terms of tensioning to reduce the amount of light bleeding that is native to IPS displays this is done to higher end desktop displays but I'm not sure if it can be done to a form fitted display like the one for the Surface.
Thanks for the info. I'd be curious to compare the difference between the two screens.
I think the point is that Chinese products are getting progressively less crappy. Rapidly, even. Just like what happened to every other up and coming industrial power.

Perhaps another 4-5 years and the same will be true across a lot more product categories.

Made in USA/Germany will simply become what Made in the UK became long ago. [1]

Maybe. I had already assumed many product parts were made in China and the only difference was how much quality control was put into place.
"Made in Germany" was introduced to mark it as an inferior foreign product and became later a sign of quality. So China may be following in Germany's footsteps.
Hi, would someone mind commenting which model of laptop is mentioned behind the paywall? thanks.
What paywall? I saw a quote of the day -- without any advertisement -- and then was on the actual article after a few seconds delay.
I think he meant AdblockWall. Forbes won't let you in before you turn off your Adblock.
I've had issues with Forbes in the past, but this time uBlock Origin didn't cause me any problems with Forbes.
Old Surface Pro 1/2 yes, probably because they know the supplier. It's not the same as the Pro 3 onwards.
Will this be possible to purchase in the US?
Are there even any other "pixel alternatives" out there now that that's dead? By which i mean 3:2 or 4:3 display rather than 16:9/10, relatively small, not a tablet, etc. I'm not really interested in the surface pro, and was excited to see this until i saw it had an atom CPU.
