Ask HN: LIDAR sensor for development?

I work on a field related to 3D modeling and environment composition and I'm looking to start playing with LIDAR sensors to measure spaces and distance in rooms.

Is there any developer friendly LIDAR sensor that you guys know? It would be good if it worked over USB port, had a .NET SDK and be cheap :)

It also needs to be accurate to centimeters.

Any suggestions with these restrictions? Any alternatives?

We've (https://littlebirdelectronics.com.au) sold the LIDAR-Lite v3 for a while, they're pretty solid.

If you're thinking about the RPLIDAR, get it from DF-Robot and not Seeed Studio (DF have better shipping).

I've used the LIDAR-LITE v2 (the V3 is now available) to build a product that incorporated a motor to scan the beam.

I made a handful of units for one company last summer, so the dev cost is covered already. I'd be willing to build a few more. How many do you need?

I'm going on a tangent on my job to make a proof of concept that would later be presented and maybe funded so I have 0 dollars to put on this at this point.

My guesstimate is that once everything is said and done we would need about 20 units. But It's a wild guess. It could be way more.
