IoTA/Tangle: yet another pied piper?

https://iota.org/IOTA_Whitepaper.pdf They claim to make IoT micro-payments feasible. Is there any substantial and well-founded discussion about this proposal? Any known attacks on the design? In your opinion, how hyped is this?
