Ask HN: How did WannaCry spread so fast?

Most Ransomware I've heard us spreads through infected downloads or email attachments. There seems to be a "worm-like" property of this one that allows it to spread within a network, using that NSA exploit. Can someone explain what this exploit is and how it works? What hole is it taking advantage of?
