The worst of PC nonsense. Our local falafel joint is owned/operated by two Israeli guys. The Japanese place by a couple from Taiwan. Heck, the Italian supper club by some Lutheran Germans.
This whole 'appropriation' farce hurts everybody involved.
Yes this is nonsense but it's backlash against centuries of racism. And on the other side you've got many emboldened racists coming out and harassing or attacking minorities. These attacks are feeding the passion of the other side as well. You have idiots chanting "Build the wall" at schools and mexican resorts for Christ sakes. These lunatic antics are coming back to bite them back in the ass although it's innocent people who are the victims.
"cultural appropriation" is a joke. Culture IS appropriation. That's how you GET culture, is to get it from somewhere....as if white people are supposed to not embrace other things outside of their so called ancestry, which is riddled with variety and "cultural appropriation". My Norse and Germanic ancestors loved appropriating cultures and I have the genes I have today because they grabbed shiny stuff they liked. Whiny normative lefties with too much to do.
It would be a different story if they had stolen recipes from Hispanic/Latinx people in Portland but it sounds like they got them from observation Mexico and then sort of adapted them to their own. That being said, they didn't do themselves any favors in how they described them "peeking" in and watching the ladies work. Might seem cute to them but it does sound a little unawares and tone deaf. I cringed reading them.
If they had worded it differently I doubt they would've received this much backlash.
Is Portland really that racist of a place? I have a hard time believing that the majority of people in Portland are so overtly racist that they won't buy a burrito from someone who doesn't look they are they Hispanic.
How about a different theory to fix the facts. Restaurants are hard and not nearly as profitable as people would think. Two people with very little experience decided they would make one and after having to deal with the reality's of running a very low margin business _and_ on top of that being accosted by a minority of extremely racist people they decided it wasn't worth their time and moved onto something else. There is no need to fan the flames of extremism on either side of this story.
