Ask HN: Should I quit my job to practice for whiteboard interviews?

I'm currently employed as a software developer and am paid reasonably well, but the work isn't challenging and I feel like I'm stagnating. I don't have a college degree and I don't think I could pass a whiteboard interview at a top company.

My eventual goal is to get hired at a top company, but I never seem to have enough time to put in significant study and practice. My job takes all my time.

I have enough saved to pay my bills for about 2 years. I'm considering quitting my job, dropping my income to $0/yr, and studying for whiteboard interviews full time for 6-12 months to get into a position at a top company.

Am I crazy to be considering this? I know the algorithms and whiteboard questions are something I can easily teach myself with time, but I have fears of failing to even get the interviews because of resume filters, and then finding myself in a position where I've been unemployed for a year and can't get re-hired, etc.

Anyone with a similar experience? I feel like this is a pivotal year for me. I don't want to stay a second-rate developer my whole life.
