HN Feature Request: Select Reason for Down Vote

3 points by nope123 ↗ HN
Sometimes, it's really frustrating trying to figure out why people are down voting some comment.

It would be very helpful if we had a pull down menu (or something like that) to select the Reason for down vote, from a fixed list, e.g:

(some of these are sarcastic or cynical -- signs of my own frustration)

- comment is irrelevant to the topic. - comment contains a profanity. - commenter has angry tone (suppress emotions FTW! [sarcasm]). - commenter has cynical tone (bury passive aggressive behavior rather than be curious). - commenter said something I didn't agree with. - commenter said something in another thread that I didn't agree with and I hold grudges. - I woke up on wrong side of bed today. - prefer not to say. - etc...

In addition to reducing frustration on both sides by giving the ability to communicate the reason for each down vote, we'll be able to do meaningful analytics and understand each other better.

Why not add the feature?

I guess this is about https://news.ycombinator.com/threads?id=nope123

I didn't downvote it, but as a rule of thumb follow this unofficial rules:

* No jokes in HN

* No oneliners in HN

* No references in HN

You can break them, but it's very difficult to know when you can break them.

You have some deep interpretation of your comment, but it's not obvious at all. Always write the full version assuming the reader will not understand the shorter form.

In general, HN tries to avoid as much meta discussion as possible, so I guess the mods will not implement this.
