Less dickish response: http://www.givewell.org/ creates a list of the charities that are supposedly the most effective per dollar donated. Looking at their recommended charities would probably be a good place to start.
My personal recommendation based on my own biases is to donate to the ACLU or the Wikimedia Foundation.
One weird way to find organizations to donate to is to go to smile.amazon.com and use their search feature that is intended to be used to find the charity that they will donate to on your behalf. There isn't a way to just look at the full list there as far as I can tell, but for example if your interest is clean water, you can search for "water" and you will get thousands of non-profits with water in their name.
