Ask HN: Why do you buy and how do you choose cryptocurrencies?

If you buy that is..

I'm wondering if people are still into a higher vision of the technology or just wanting to take part in the ever rising markets to make money?

Also if you buy (regardless of motive) how do you choose what to buy or do you just go for the default Bitcoin? What exact parameters are you looking for? Like Proof-of-Work vs. Proof-of-Stake, limited number of coins vs. inflationary, how important is how the community operates? How developers are paid?

I buy because I believe in the tech and hope something like this could actually have a good impact on the world. But on the money side, yes I do trade sometimes and mostly it's those penny stock type small cap coins that sometimes go 2x in a day and sell it for the big ones like BTC and ETH which can be easily cashed out when needed. How do I choose those? Technical Analysis and news hype!
