Ask HN: More successful – Spirit or Letter of the law people

Example: When you were a kid and your father said, "don't let me catch you doing (insert prohibited thing here)?" For me, that did not mean I was not to do XYZ it just meant that I had better not get caught. Which do you think are more successful people overall? Which make better entrepreneurs? Why? Please give an example if possible.
