Ask HN: For people who develop browsers, what is your stance on target=“_blank”?

A semi consistent conversation we, as developers, at my company discuss is something along the lines of "should we open links in new tabs" regarding webpage buildout. Lots of anecdotes and links are shared, but really curious if the people who actually work on Safari/Chrome/Firefox/etc have an opinion about this and what the typical pros and cons of the discussion are.
