Ask HN: Can Americans Contribute to Iranian-Controlled FLOSS?

I'm an American living in the USA. I've been approached by an Iranian entrepreneur who wants help on an open source project.

Hypothetically, for IANAL purposes... what factors, if any, might an American citizen in the USA need to consider before knowingly & willingly committing to a FLOSS Git repo controlled by an Iranian in Iran?
