Ask HN: Are Back Ends as a Service Expandable?

I was thinking if Firebase, Webtask.io or Baqend are easy services to configure and scale after a while for a growing user base? If I know how to directly build infrastructure using AWS or Google Cloud, is it better for me to start building with those ground-up instead?
