Definitions of “publishing” in various languages

In light of the Wiley story about open access:

From a book by Lionel Bovier: "Etymologically speaking, being a 'publisher' has conceptual differences with the French éditeur and the German Verleger." The first emphasises the "making public", the second textual work, the third a financial advance to make printing possible. So what is publishing, essentially?
