Ask HN: How do you gain understanding of new markets?

I often hear of inefficiencies in many industries, for example construction or say retail warehousing. As an outsider, I want to gain an understanding of various processes involved, with a view of identifying inefficiencies.

Is there a good website or book which analyzes these individual industries? How would you go about discovering such industries, other than working in them!
