Ask HN: ELI5 Can I sidestep twilio/trumpia/nexmo sms api?

I am a non technical founder can someone please help me understand. Seems like twilio leases the numbers/shortcodes and resells it to us. IF, I go directly to the provider such as Telus will they sell to me? What do I need to build to sidestep twilio/trumpia/nexmo ?
