Ask HN: How Does a Software Engineer Transition to Product Manager?

Really wish I had applied to those APM programs out of school. Am finding it pretty difficult to break into PM from Software Engineer. Seems like at most places it's either APM (fresh grad) or requires 3-5+ years Product Manager experience.
