Ask HN: Whats Google appengine like as of 2017?

I did google appengine way back in 2010-2012, and a few times after that. I do have a stupid app called a transigram. It still running however, which begs me to wonder...those days one could host a free web server that had a db support ,etc built into the platform. I was hoping for the same experience, but now all I see is a google cloud platform. Which is great and all. But it seems like a 1 month free trial sort of thingy. I just want a run-off-the-mill webserver with db support like appengine used to have (with its quota limiting and all). I don't want to buy myself into the google cloud platform just for these kind of non-trivial requirements. Can we still do that in the GCP or are there better alternatives?
