Hey AWS, when you release new generations of instances, please make RIs for the generation it's replacing upgradable to the new type.

I understand customer service upgrades the RI as needed, but I don't get why the upgrade path is just not straight up there, especially if you want to retire the older instances sooner. I literally purchased an m4.large RI three days ago.

That said, OP is correct. It’s abjectly ridiculous that you have to do this.

Amazon unwisely failed to consult with William Shatner first; as he would've attested, M5s are not safe for use in Enterprise computing environments.
