Ask HN: Bus or train commuter counting

I am trying to find a device or solution that counts the number of passengers coming in and going out of a bus or train. I'm so far thinking of a Raspberry Pi with a camera, mounted near each bus or train door. I'm uncertain of whether I would be able to count passengers with OpenCV or some other ML library.

Does anyone know of a relatively cheap or DIY solution?
