MongoDB - What's this all about?

After seeing @ruby_news latest tweet about MongoDB, displaying the Mongomatic Gem (which I think looks rather neat) I'm starting to wonder about all these new technologies popping up (MongoDB, CouchDB, etc...). Is MongoDB a good place to start? How many people are using it in product and what advantages/differences can I expect from the traditional SQL environment I'm used to?
