Ask HN: Should we avoid expressing political views online?

It seems to be the case that there are people out there willing to abuse their power in order to keep people out of work on political grounds.

What is the right thing to do as an individual in response to this? Should we stay silent in the hope that discussion will eventually become less polarised and more civilised. Or by shrinking from controversy do we risk the basis of civilised society itself?
