Ask HN: Free tools for small, remote teams

Recently, I entered into a partnership with a developer in Europe to build a web/mobile application. I'm curious as to what are the best tools available to collaborate and communicate. Currently, we are simply chatting using Gtalk, but there is a need to share code/files. As this is a side project, free is best.
