Ask HN: Better to render on the client or the server?

Several years ago, Basecamp came out and said they were rendering html on the server and inserting it into the page (as far as I can tell by comments here and their blog). This differs from rendering json on the server, sending it to the client to be rendered into html and stuck into the page.

So what is actually faster in 2018 (assuming 1-2-year-old MacBook air's type of equipment)?

Let's assume a select box of 1,000 options.

I'm curious because if it is faster to render on the client, has Basecamp changed in the meantime? After all, they wanted fast pages...
