In other words, what computers in particular are they accused of hacking, and why would said computers be exposed in such a way to allow anyone to access them as easily as they say they were?

They aren't accused of hacking. They are being accused of manipulating the baby-boomer generation and anyone else that can't distinguish and ad from regular content on the internet.
