I really like this... It forces us to question our role in the universe. Whilst the pyramids have stayed, what would end up standing from the modern days?

Our days on this planet seem finite, and given progress recently I sometimes think that there can't be many generations left.

I assume it is this, doomsday paranoia. (just because you're paranoid doesn't invalidate the thesis)
Contrarily, I find it to be a total waste of time, energy and money to build such a device and stuff it into a mountain where a few handfuls of people will ever see it.

The saying "out of sight; out of mind" exists for a reason.

He's not spending your money so why not if he wants to do it.
One answer: because with as much money as he has, why the hell not?

I do think the Long Now Foundation is pretty cool, whatever I may think of Bezos & Amazon.
