Ask HN: What do you do if you're too future-focused?
I want to post here and ask this because I think a lot of folks here can relate, and maybe a few can mention some things they've done to achieve a better balance:
For example:
- I usually don't like watching new TV shows / movies all the way through since I just want to know what happens. (I find myself just watching the beginning to develop a care for the characters, then reading the wikipedia plot to find out what happens).
- I find it really hard to pick up new hobbies since I always want to be proficient immediately (for me, the fun is in seeing myself progress and imagining what it'll be like when I'm really good, as opposed to enjoying the activity itself)
- I switch my life direction (e.g. FT job --> grad school --> entrepreneurship) every 1-2 years and I've noticed that the most enjoyable part for me is always the planning for the new direction (borderline fantasizing).
- I love making big plans for the next day while drunk and then completely blowing them off when reality sets in that it's time to start them.
- In general, the only things I really enjoy involve planning / working towards the future: playing video games with objectives and quests, talking with people about where they're headed/what they're doing/why, etc. (I don't really count browsing reddit / hn / etc since that's more pleasure than enjoyment.)
So, I suppose my question would be: has anyone who's been in a similar situation found a way to enjoy the "here-and-now" more? I've tried a few things, mainly meditating (3 months every day so far), but I haven't noticed a discernable difference.
