Ask HN: An active stylus that can write some distance from screen?

I was using a Surface Pen today and noticed it was straining to lean in to the device.

Is there any stylus type device that allows you to sit back from the screen and still operate it, in a similar manner to, if you can imagine, holding a laser pointer but the laser pointer is working as an active stylus?
