Ask HN: Why does Google Pay insist on getting so many Permissions on Android?

I've disabled all permissions for all apps that I think don't need them, and now I get dozens of notifications a day from Google Pay that it can't work properly without access to: Calendar, Camera, Contacts, Microphone, Telephone, Body Sensors, and SMS.

I understand security might be enhanced by having more access to these items, but it's a default app and they're default permissions and they just seem a bit much.
