Even thought I prefer geeqie [0] I always look forward to the new digiKam release. Managing your photos in linux is tedious to be frank, I run my lightweight system and mostly manage it through shell scripts. If digiKam was more lightweight I would certainly use it again, but using this full blown kde app gave me more than one headache (not to say that digikam is not great if someone asks me what program he/she should use for managing photos I wouldn't think twice)

I tried every alternative I could find f-spot [1], shotwell [2], gthumb [3] and some more. Some alternatives without packages or updates in the last 5 years like mapivi and jbrout I didn't even try. Digikam was unstable at times and sometimes a bit on the slow side, but functions wise it went above and beyond anything the other programs had to offer (the only feature that was missing was sorting images by orientation and ratio). If at any point in time I'll be looking for an alternative to my current solution the first thing I will take a look at will be digiKam.
