Indeed, how many thousands (millions?) have been killed at the hands of royal families who are still in power ( and mostly celebrated), around the world? It is ok, they are royal.
If only there were less regulation and government interference—then the miners could have chosen to freely associate with different murderous rich people.
I worry that as reddit becomes less useful, hacker news becomes more interesting to people who want to have the sort of ideological conversations that eventually drown out the interesting stuff about tech and startups.
On the other hand, there are some people in startup circles who argue that markets solve everything. I think free markets are an excellent thing overall, but it's a helpful caution to see just how badly they can go wrong without some external rules being enforced.
I think that's being a bit dramatic. In the 4 or 5 years that I've been here there's always been political and ideological conversations mixed in with people's projects, startups and tech news.
The tech community has a certain microcosm of political views that makes the political threads interesting reads. The rules against editorialized titles and comment quality here is usually a lot higher making them much more informative.
I'm sure if HN was overtaken with ideological posts rather than Show HNs, tech blogs, etc. they would just modify the hotness ranking code and anti flame war code.
