Ash HN: Good intro to monitoring/alerting framework

Can you share some blog posts, presentations about modern monitoring & alerting framework used by web scale companies ?

I hear a lot of about Graphite, Prometheus, Nagios, Datadog etc. But missing the big picture view of how to put the pieces together for a complete monitoring stack that is scalable and efficient.
