Ask HN: Does Google violate GDPR by storing data even after account removal?

I'm not a Google user but I had to create accounts with them a few times. Every time I removed the newly created account as soon as my work was done.

Now when I'm trying to create an account again it doesn't let me use the phone numbers associated with accounts deleted back in 2014 or so. So, for some reason they never really removed my phone numbers from their system.

Is it a violation of GDPR? What else data do they preserve despite the account removal?
