Ask HN: How to develop a strategy for a small SaaS business with no MBA's?

Im the founder and CEO of a small online SAAS business with revenues approaching 8 figures p.a. Our market is becoming increasingly competitive and our rate of growth is slowing. We've never done any real strategic management or planning, mostly because I have a tech background and no training in business however I realise after some research that its something we have to do with urgency or die.

We definitely cannot afford a big 4 consultant. I understand that a consultant cannot devise our strategy for us as they don't truly understand our customers values or market, however I have no idea where to start and the number of books on the subject are overwhelming.

It would seem that we should be hiring someone experienced to facilitate our strategy development but most consultants appear to be affiliated with different commercial strategy frameworks which makes me feel uneasy. Does anyone have any advice? Or any recommendations on what type of person we should hire and where to look?
