Is there a reason why the /newest queue is absolutely full of these stories? Does every domain-specific news site have some mandate to carry general interest stories matching a particular narrative?

That's your opinion, and half the country vehemently disagrees, but what does any of this have to do with computers and hacker news? Can't you guys keep this kind of opinion posting somewhere else where people are into that?
