How much can a mechanical engineer expect to earn at a startup?

I'm going to graduate with a BS in mechanical engineering next year. I really want to work in tech because I hate the work culture of the $bigcorps I've interned at. Can mechanical engineers expect comparable compensation to software engineers? Is there an expectation of many years of experience or do companies prefer new college grads?
