Ask HN: Experiences running cloud resources inside mainland China?

I work for a web monitoring company that is looking to spin up some cloud servers in mainland China. While there are a lot of companies that will host static content for you inside mainland China, we need to spin up Linux instances that can run various workloads, such as headless browsers and install kernel modules. Essentially EC2, but in China. I'm perfectly happy to do this with an existing global cloud provider who has a China region, such as AWS China or Azure China.

Once we researched this, the requirements seem pretty daunting. (all paperwork, licenses, regulatory paperwork in Chinese; establishing and maintain separate business entity or subsidiary; obtaining and maintaining ICP license and renewal; complying with varying central and regional rules). We have found a number of companies that can do this for you and act as your local representative, but these services are light on information and frankly its a little scary to empower someone you don't know well to act on your business's behalf in another country as strict as China.

I'm looking for feedback and experiences of anyone who has run cloud resources inside of mainland China. Specifically about how did you acquired and maintained their ICP? What challenges did you have? What are the general day-to-day pros and cons of running cloud resources in China?
