It's a really awful city in all respects. Lowest wages, highest costs of living, mayoral approval lowest in the country.
I've been in some of the numerous downtown apartment buildings run by the slum lords... it's worse than a "3rd world" country. Holes in the ceilings, walls, floors; tenants complain they don't have running water; graffiti everywhere saying "fuck Vancouver", "fuck the landlords", etc.
But you look at the downtown skyline and thinks it's modern and beautiful--look behind the curtain and it's unfathomable inhumanity. And the ones living in those dilapidated towers of suffering are in addition to the homeless camps throughout the city. There are large homeless communities of 30-100 people each, but also spreading throughout the city are more and more 1-2 occupant tents. They are just normal now in the very same neighbourhoods where houses are torn down and near-mansions crammed on the the tiny properties amongst next door to far older homes.
It's just completely fucked up, and makes a strong case for moving to the middle of fucking nowhere and working remotely if you're a developer.
